I started the project with the free version of Game Maker Studio 2. The Bosca Ceoil interface Hitting Some Walls ThatвЂ™s why the music of the game is horrendous (and thatвЂ™s why I gave the player the option to mute it). I have none so I just hit the buttons and put notes randomly until it made an acceptable melody. The Bxfr interfaceДЇor the music, Bosca Ceoil is also simple to use but you have to have some music theory knowledge if you want to make anything that sounds good. ItвЂ™s perfect for small games like these but I doubt it would be useful for a real commercial project. The template I used for designing my tilesetДЇor the sounds, Bxfr is pretty intuitive to use and can generate random sounds of a specific type for you. But it means we have to create a tileset with a specific format to make it easier to implement. Game Maker Studio 2 also allows for auto-tiling, which means it finds automatically which tile is the right one to put at a specific position depending on its neighbouring tiles.

Not the design itself, but having to learn how to make spritesheets at the right proportions, placing the image at the right place for it to animate or scroll correctly etc (the trees and mountains in the background). Making the assets of the game was probably the longest part of the project.

I recreated all of the sprites using Krita with a Wacom Intuos Draw Small.

With this project, I wanted to make everything myself so I could get a taste of what it really takes to finish a game. There are only very basic functionalities but it still makes for a playable game and a great learning experience. ThereвЂ™s a simple menu and different endings вЂ“ well, itвЂ™s just a different text really вЂ“ depending on what you do during the game. You can pickup a gun, shoot, jump and get killed by enemies who are also walking inside the park. Also, the room name is displayed in the corner of the view port and we can use the plus/minus keys to move between rmTest and rmTemplate.This is a simple 2D platformer where you play a little guy who wants to take a walk in a park. I decided on oBlock, oSlope1R, oSlope1L, and oPlayer.ДЄt this point we can see a few sprites on screen. We can also create a few empty objects to get something on screen. The second will be physics objects that collide with the collision objects. IвЂ™ll quickly wrap up this portion by creating two parent objects: oParSolid and oParEntity. We will use this to test our initial gameplay. Duplicate this room and call it вЂrmTestвЂ™. This room will be set to the desired resolution (640Г—360 -> 16:9), it will have the view port info in place, and it will be set to the minimal room size (also, 640Г—360). I am also going to handle a few other things that will make further development easier. This means that the object will only be created once and will remain active when moving between rooms. This object will also be marked as вЂpersistentвЂ™.
